Few can lay claim to landing on the moon or seeing our planet from space. These few men and women have made a great contribution to the furthering our knowledge of our world and beyond, and they are celebrated with these special coin issues. The collection starts with a two-coin set marking the 50th anniversary of the 1969 first moon landing. This set includes a pure gold coin representing the moon and a pure silver coin with an innovative colour surface. The second part of the set is a convex-shaped glow-in-the-dark Canadian $25 silver coin showing the earth as seen from space.

50 Years of Moon Landing Two-Coin Set Fifty years ago, humanity left Earth's exosphere and landed the first men on the moon. History was made. This two-coin set commemorates this outstanding event with a 39-mm, colour, one-ounce fine silver coin representing the earth together with an 11-mm, 0.5-gram pure gold coin representing the moon. While the silver coin features North America and the launch site of Apollo 11, the pure gold coin features details of the surface of the moon with Neil Armstrong's famous first footstep. The coins are dated 2019 and are legal tender in Barbados. • Mintage: 11,969 • Diameter: 39 mm (Earth coin); 11 mm (Moon coin) • Weight: 1 oz fine silver (Earth coin); 0.5 g pure gold (Moon coin)
$25 A View from Space Fine Silver Coin The reverse design by Canadian artist Alexandra Lefort combines colour with glow-in-the-dark effects to recreate a breathtaking view of Earth from space. The partial view of the Western Hemisphere places the focus on North America—specifically Canada—while the application of colour captures the nuances that characterize the different regions, and the different blues that mark the ocean depth. Within the outer band that frames the field, the 25th anniversary of Dr. Roberta Bondar's historic space mission is commemorated by the number "25" and a miniature depiction of the space shuttle Discovery, as it appeared on Dr. Bondar's personal mission crest. • Mintage: 8,500 • Diameter: 36 mm • Weight: 1 oz fine silver
About Apollo 11 Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the moon. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin formed the American crew that landed the Apollo lunar module Eagle on July 20, 1969. Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours and 39 minutes later on July 21; Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later. They spent about two-and-a-quarter hours together outside the spacecraft, and they collected 21.5 kg of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Command module pilot Michael Collins flew the command module Columbia alone in lunar orbit while they were on the moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent 21 hours and 31 minutes on the lunar surface at a site they named Tranquility Base before lifting off to rejoin Columbia in lunar orbit.
About Roberta Bondar On January 22, 1992, the NASA space shuttle Discovery launched from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral with a crew of seven, including neurologist Dr. Roberta Bondar, MD, PhD, who holds the distinction of being Canada's first female astronaut.
