Product Overview
Prior to Canadian confederation in 1867, low denomination coinage for Lower Canada (Province du Bas Canada, now Quebec) was a combination of official, semi-official and merchant-issued copper coins and tokens. This semi-official one penny coin was issued in 1837 by the City Bank with government authorization and with full weight for the denomination, making it one of the most widely accepted coins in commerce. Â Most coins of this type were widely circulated and most surviving coins are well worn lower grades. This is a rare, near-perfect Gem Uncirculated example, independently graded and certified by NGC as Mint State 65, and with a brown colour from oxidation.
