Product Overview

This exquisite gold proof coin features Colonel Chris Hadfield on his historic spacewalk with a laser-enhanced Canadarm at the ready to give a helping hand.

On April 22, 2001, Colonel Hadfield made history as the first Canadian to perform a spacewalk when he installed Canadarm2 on the International Space Station (ISS), 400 kilometres above the earth. This next-generation robotic arm followed the success of the Canadarm, the first robotic arm ever built for space. The Canadarm proved so effective for the shuttle's astronauts that scientists wanted one for the ISS—Hadfield used Canadarm when he installed Canadarm2.

From the moment it became operational, Canadarm2 has been a critical component in the construction of the ISS, and has been equally important in its maintenance in the years since. Virtually every mission relied on it, and now this amazing technological achievement can be celebrated with pride on this commemorative coin.
