Product Overview

One of the most popular sets of coins produced each year by the Royal Canadian Mint is the Specimen Set. This collection features some of the highest quality coins struck for collectors in an elegant burgundy book-format presentation. All of the denominations from the five-cent coin to the two-dollar coin are presented, including the low-mintage half-dollar.

In 2014, the highlight of the Specimen Set was this unique one-dollar coin featuring the ferruginous hawk, with masterful engraving capturing it in flight. The ferruginous hawk has sharp talons, and spotted plumage on its facial features. This right side profile allows for an excellent view of the bird's majestic wings as it slows its descent and stretches out its feather-covered legs in preparation for a landing.

• Mintage: 50,000

About Ferruginous Hawks
The male and female have identical markings. The main difference is size, with the female being somewhat larger. Perched birds have a white breast and body with dark legs. The back and wings are a brownish-rust colour. The head is white with a dark streak extending behind the eye, and the wing tips almost reach the tip of the tail. The ferruginous hawk is one of the only two hawks that have feathers that cover their legs down to their toes.
