2015 Five-Ounce Fine Silver Big Coin 50-Cent Coin

This huge five-ounce 65-mm 2015 pure silver five-cent coin is the part of the elusive 2015 first-issue Big Coins pure silver coin series. With a mintage of just 1,500 for each coin, it is not surprising all the coins in the series sold out immediately from the Royal Canadian Mint. In addition to being spectacular-looking coins, each Big Coin now forms part of the top-quality coin set in Canada, and individually they represent the highest quality coin for each denomination.

While a regular 50-cent coin has a diameter of 27 mm and a weight of just 6.9 grams in base metal, this 50-cent coin has a diameter of 65 mm and has a weight of over 155 grams, or five ounces, in pure silver. This is about equal the weight of 23 regular half-dollars. The coin is double-struck to ensure fine detail and a near-flawless surface, while the design is further enhanced with selective 24-karat gold plating on both sides, highlighting the coin's main design and the effigy of the Queen. The mintage of this coin and others in the Big Coins series is extremely low, with only 1,500 coins of each design being produced.
